Michigan Wolverines football: Newly converted cornerback causing major buzz

The 2023 Michigan Wolverines football roster is one of the best in the nation. The Maize and Blue have won consecutive Big Ten titles and more over the past two seasons and appear poised for bigger and better things during the coming season, which is less than 60 days away from kicking off. One fresh face that will need to step up this year is newly converted cornerback Amorion Walker, a rising true sophomore who will be contending for a starting role opposite Will Johnson throughout summer practice.

Michigan Wolverines football may have a star in the making with Amorion Walker

Will Johnson, a rising sophomore standout, is one of the top cornerbacks in all of college football. Last year, the former five-star defender earned Freshman All-American honors, helping the Michigan Wolverines to a 13-1 finish, including a Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff appearance for the second season in a row.

While Johnson headlines the cornerback room, there have been some concerns voiced about Michigan’s depth at this position. That said, newly converted cornerback Amorion Walker and new transfer portal commit Josh Wallace appear to be gearing up for great things in the Maize and Blue and will surely contend for the CB2 spot across from Johnson.

Ahead of spring ball earlier this year, Amorion Walker — a former three-star wide receiver — was moved to cornerback. His massive frame and impressive athleticism make him a prime target for the Wolverines out wide. In fact, Jim Harbaugh has expressed his excitement about this impressive athlete on a number of occasions over the past few months.

“Been right before, been wrong before. But we’ll see,” Jim Harbaugh said, per ON3. “But I think he’s right on track. I’m pleased with how he’s playing.”

In addition to the Michigan Wolverines’ head coach being pleased with Walker, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has also expressed satisfaction with Walker’s on-field performance.

“What I say is he has the traits, the skills to be able to play the position,” Michigan football defensive play-caller Jesse Minter said. “He hasn’t played the position enough to be really, really comfortable yet. I think, you know, he might not like me saying this but I think one of the best things that happened to him was the spring game and going through a little bit of adversity, having guys make plays.”

This year is bound to be a significant one for the Michigan Wolverines football team. If the Maize and Blue expect to take the next step and contend for a national title next January, Amorion Walker and the rest of the Wolverines’ impressive defense must step up and meet these lofty national expectations.
